TRUE MANAGEMENT LEADERS by Jerico Buñing

Becoming an effective leader will be more difficult yet more important than ever in the 21st Century. Today's and tomorrow's new employees do not and will not trust management as much as their parents trusted their employers, unless that trust is earned.

Additionally, workers in this new generation want to be more informed and routinely recognized for their creativity and accomplishments if they are going to be held accountable for following an organization's rules. An excellent example of this culture occurs at Southwest Airlines. Many people leave higher paying jobs each year to go to work for Southwest Airlines because of the continuous positive recognition that airline employees receive. Southwest Airlines creates an enjoyable workplace while still holding employees accountable. But keep in mind that a great organizational culture will not make a difference if the individual manager does not create a positive working climate or environment for their employees.

I would like to share with you, especially if your are already in the President's Cabinet or had the potential of becoming a Management Leader someday, a list of Management Philosophies posted in the Internet.

10 GREAT BELIEFS OF GREAT MANAGEMENT LEADERS

Management Leaders believe that people are innately good. Without this core belief and faith in people, great management is not possible.

Management Leaders believe they do not work on their people, they work with them; they enable and empower them.

Management Leaders believe that empowerment comes from within, and has more to do with self-motivation and innate talent than with the acceptance of authority. They get their cues from the person, not from the task or process.

Management Leaders believe that all people have strengths which can be made stronger, and that their weaknesses can be compensated for to become irrelevant.

When it comes to training, the great Management Leaders do not believe they train people, they believe they train skills and offer additional knowledge.

Management Leaders believe they coach and mentor people, and they love doing so -- not "like", love.

Management Leaders believe that the people they manage are more than capable of creating a better future. They hold great faith and trust in the four-fold human capacities of physical ability, intellect, emotion and spirit.

Management Leaders believe in the power of positive, affirmative thinking, and they have a low tolerance for negativity. They are confident and eternal optimists.

Management Leaders believe it is their job to remove barriers and obstacles so people can attain the level of greatness they are destined for. They believe that can't is a temporary state of affairs, and that everything is only impossible until the first person does it.

Management Leaders believe that their legacy will be the other people they have helped to achieve worthwhile and meaningful goals. They believe that success is measured in people who thrive and prosper.

There might be other management principles or beliefs not included in the above list but complying to these 10 Great Beliefs will certainly make one the OUTSTANDING MANAGER OF THE YEAR. It is not easy to be an effective and good management leader but you have NO CHOICE to be one if you have accepted that role or position in the organization. NO EXCUSES shall be made by a Management Leader for his/her failure to properly plan, lead, organize and control. A true Management Leader is ACCOUNTABLE for his/her actions and decisions and will never blame anyone for his/her failures. Again, no other management style or strategy can beat LEADERSHIP BY EXAMPLE principle. This is why I loved the movie 300 where in King Leonidas always lead his battle by literally placing himself ahead of his warriors. By doing this, he has earned the trust and respect of his 300 Spartans.

Are you ready to follow the footsteps of King Leonidas?
