SIBALE SEQUEL: HOLY WEEK ADVENTURE TOUR by Jennifer Abuda

Sibale Island… just one of the many proofs that our country truly has a beautiful, breathtaking archipelago. Located between Mindoro and Romblon, the island is treasured with white sand beaches and crystal clear blue waters, comparable to the beaches in Boracay and Palawan. I feel so lucky to again have enjoyed its splendor, setting aside the trouble of the long journey to reach the island paradise.

Trinity Outdoor Club for Employees (TOCE) organized the 4-day adventure trip together with Trinity Outdoor Mountaineers Club alumni and friends to serve as respite from their busy work life. The budget of P2,000 included transportation and food expenses, and port/terminal fees.

As before, the group stayed with "Kuya Nieb", our friend who owns part of the island of Sibale. There are no hotels on the island so the group camped out on the beach, beneath coconut trees. We draw water from an artesian well, which we use for both bathing and cooking. We communed with nature and interacted with Kuya Nieb's only-daughter, Angel, and his fisher-folk neighbors.

Sibale Island is perfect for swimming and snorkeling because it is dotted with many mini coves and bays, which seabed is teaming with life. On my first dip, I couldn't help but be nervous. It is hard to bravely look through wide-brimmed swim goggles towards the seemingly endless underground forest beneath me. Likewise, it is doubly hard to bravely swim through mild currents to take pleasure in looking at sea urchins, varied-colored corals and unusual varieties of fishes, which some are brave enough to brush against me as I swim with them in the shallow waters.

On our second day, we took a hike up a small hill planted with copra to see the other side of the island. As in the beach where Kuya Nieb and his family had built their house on, the other beach is also white-sanded, which luminosity could hurt your eyes, especially during a sunny day. We couldn't just content ourselves with memories of the place; we had to take a zillion pictures.

Many people spend so much on drugs just to get high. I wish they could experience the natural high I had at Sibale Island.
